Every Malaysian registration number follows the same basic shape: a prefix of one or more letters, a number from 1 to 9999, and sometimes a suffix letter. Take JQM 8 or WA 1234 B: the prefix tells you which series the number came from, the digits are the part most buyers care about, and the suffix shows that the series has cycled through its numbers and started again.

Why the prefix matters to buyers

For many people the prefix is personal. A Johor family may want a J plate, a business may want letters that match its initials, and some buyers simply prefer a short prefix because it looks cleaner. Prefixes also affect price: a short, early prefix with a strong number is usually rarer than the same number on a long, recent series.

State prefixes

The first letter of a standard prefix generally identifies the state or territory where the series was issued:

  • A – Perak (browse A plates)
  • B – Selangor (B plates)
  • C – Pahang (C plates)
  • D – Kelantan (D plates)
  • F – Putrajaya
  • J – Johor (J plates)
  • K – Kedah, with KV used for Langkawi
  • L – Labuan
  • M – Melaka (M plates)
  • N – Negeri Sembilan
  • P – Pulau Pinang (P plates)
  • R – Perlis
  • T – Terengganu
  • V and W – Kuala Lumpur (W plates, V plates)
  • Q – Sarawak, and S – Sabah, where the next letter usually relates to a division or district

You can filter the whole inventory by state from the search page; for example, Johor plates or Selangor plates.

Single, double and triple-letter prefixes

Within a state, series run alphabetically. A one-letter prefix such as J or W belongs to the earliest series, two letters (such as JA or WA) came next, and three letters (such as JQM or VJR) are the newer series. Shorter prefixes tend to be in higher demand simply because there are fewer of them. When you search on Goldhill you can choose the alphabet layout, such as a one-letter prefix only, from the advanced filters on the inventory page.

Suffixes

When a series has used every number from 1 to 9999, a suffix letter can be added so the series continues, for example WA 1234 B. Some buyers avoid suffixes for a cleaner look, while others like them because they can make a sought-after number more affordable.

Special and commemorative prefixes

Malaysia also issues special series that are not tied to a single state, such as VIP and other commemorative or organisation prefixes. These are often sought after for their exclusivity. Availability and the rules for using them vary, so confirm the details for any special series before you buy.

Does the prefix have to match where I live?

A registration number's prefix shows where the series was issued; it is generally a matter of preference rather than a requirement tied to your address. If you are unsure whether a particular number can be used on your vehicle, check with the seller and confirm the current JPJ requirements before paying.
