Many memorable registration numbers change hands when owners sell a car, upgrade to a new number or simply decide they no longer need a special plate. If you hold a number that buyers might want, selling it through a dealer can be simpler than finding a buyer yourself. This guide explains what to prepare and what to expect.
Is your number in demand?
Demand usually follows the same patterns buyers search for: short numbers, repeating or mirror digits, lucky combinations and short or early prefixes. Our guides to number patterns and prefixes explain what tends to attract interest. Even ordinary-looking numbers can matter to someone with a personal connection, so it is worth asking.
What to prepare
- The full registration number, exactly as it appears, including any suffix.
- Your asking price, or a range you would consider.
- Your name and a phone number on WhatsApp so the team can reply.
- Useful remarks, such as whether the number is currently on a vehicle you are selling and how soon you want to complete.
- Proof that you hold the number, such as your vehicle documents. Have them ready, but do not post personal documents publicly or send them before you are asked by the team handling the transfer.
Setting an asking price
Look at comparable numbers in the current inventory: same length, similar pattern and a similar prefix. Remember that listed prices are asking prices, not guaranteed sale prices, and that very high asking prices can take longer to sell. If you are unsure, submit your number with your preferred price and the team can discuss it with you.
What happens after you submit
- Submit your number on the sell your plate page.
- The Goldhill team reviews the details and contacts you on WhatsApp, usually within 24 business hours.
- If the number suits our buyers, we discuss pricing, how the number will be presented and the steps for the transfer.
- When a buyer is found, the transfer is completed through the JPJ procedures that apply, and payment is arranged as agreed.
Submitting a number does not oblige you to sell, and nothing is listed publicly without your agreement.
Avoiding common pitfalls
- Agree the price, fees and timeline in writing before any paperwork starts.
- Do not hand over original documents or sign transfer forms until you understand exactly what you are signing and who is receiving them.
- Be wary of buyers who ask you to transfer first and pay later without a clear agreement.
- Check the current official requirements on the JPJ website, as procedures and fees can change.
